Lidsville follows the adventures of a boy named Mark, played by actor Butch Patrick, who had earlier portrayed wolf-boy Eddie Munster on The Munsters. Intrigued by the miracles he witnesses performed by Merlo The Magician, the inquisitive boy from Jackson City is soon trespassing in Merlo's dressing room, whereupon he discovers that Merlo's hat has been left unattended. Indeed, this is a Magic Hat, which, after Mark peers inside to divine the magician's trade secrets, begins to vibrate and buzz as all Magic Hats are wont to do. Startled by this, Mark drops it on the floor and then watches as the hat continues to grow to an enormous size. He climbs up on the brim, attempting to look inside, but loses his balance and falls into a bottomless hole.

Mark is magically and deliciously transported to Lidsville, which, as anyone knows, can be found "On Magic Maps, Where The Mountains Wear Mountain Caps, Lined With Welcome Mats." This community -- which is not to be confused with Nitty-Gritty-Ville -- is populated by, what else? Giant Talking Hats.
