Mike Portnoy and John Petrucci on music, technology, and other hot topics

Their legendary stage prowess and intensely dramatic, high-energy live show is perfectly captured on Rhino's new Live At Budokan CD and DVD. We sat down with guitarist John Petrucci and drummer Mike Portnoy recently to talk about...

Excellent and informative. Smart musicians... makes me kinda proud to have engineered on some of their 1996/97 stuff. Keep rocking!
Still rockin' hard and faithful to their style. As a fan, I feel proud to own every DT recording, and they never cease to amaze me; they are amazing and talented musicians. Each album is different, unique, and meaningful, with my favorite progressive and virtuostic elements. Guys, you rock!!!!!! and best of luck for the coming years.
Really really great musicians Love them...
the most interesting for me, is the Images And Words album, their music and performance is realy-realy rock! i wonder know if they can be like that in the next time! syncing skill and the lyrics not too focused to the high tech kit...
About 10 years ago I was introduced to this band by a friend guitarist and right away I though wow! these guys are great, but I did not get fully hooked until their album in 2003 Train of Thought, that album just rocked!!! and now am hooked for good! These guys go from mellow ballands to the most heavy riffs. Good job guys, you guys are the best, see you in Toronto September 3rd!!! Rock ON!!!!
They are the greatest musicians ever born! They're genius! I'm looking forward to their concert here in Norway!
LOVE Dream Theater from day ONE ! these guys change the way I see music and made me able to lisen and apreciate lot's of music styles. Thank you guys, (Keep music alive) ...
i remember the exact place i was at when i heard my first piece of music by them, "SoC" off the Train of Thought album, and that exact moment was when my favorite band was established for the numerous years to come...

Venezuela Love them, this is the best progressive rock in the whole world, you guys are the best!!! keep on like that best regards.....
Wow...great insights into a truly amazing band.
Cool to see some aspects of their "what's going on behind the scenes". My mom once gave me their first album for christmas in the believe it was a Europe CD. (Yeah, I don't know what she was thinking, either) Needless to say my interest in Europe (come on, I was six years old!) decreased to a minimum since then. I love DT. Less than a month before I can see them again.
Great interview.
All hail the modern Gods of Prog.
i think you guys are great rock on!!!
unique minds unearthly musicians the best of all
Every new CD from these wonderful artists is like a bottle of the most expensive wine: When you try it first, you'll get only a hint of what you could savour when you are more familiar with this unique stuff! It is impressing how this band can always create fine art like that and be succcesfull without being dependend on the commercial world of music business.Keep on guys and all the best from Hamburg
DreamTheater are exceptional musicians. In every record they do, there always something new to offer to their fans. I love these guys!!! You ROCK out world guys!!!!!!
I am 16. and i have never seen a concert before in my life... until march 17th when i saw DT in minneapolis. it was the best thing in my entire life. and i wont ever see a better concert from a different band.

keep on doing the good thing like six degrees-awake-train of thought-Images and words.please play again on the Arrows classic rock festival in Lichtenvoorde-Holland!!!!! RRRROCK!! Tonnie S from L.A.(Lichtenvoorde Achterhoek-Holland)
A band that just keeps getting better and better. All you need to do is listen to them once, and their music does the talking. Love em . BTW great interview footage enjoyed them thanks.
The greatest band I've ever heard in my live. I am fan of Malmsteen, Al di Meola and Vivaldi. Dream Theater has all aspects of music in their own music. I am guitarplayer in a German rockband, but if you hear Dream Theater, you are nearly about to stop your own thing, because you could never do it better than D.T. This year I got the images & words-CD as the only one i have from Dream Theater. Since that moment, I hear this CD five or six times a day in my car. And the best of all: My wife appreciate it as well as me.... Micha Schneider
JOHN PETRUCCI RUUUUUUUUULES!
I'm from Chile, and I'm a big fan too...They're playing tomorrow and I have the tickets to go see them. If it wasn't for john petrucci, I wouldn't probably know the things I know with my guitar. Love DT
thanks to a friend, I knew this band... I appreciate their serious. each album seems to be better than the last while being completely different. they are redefining the progressive rock. moreover, all the members are vituoses. I recommend Dream Theater to you all !! thanks Yass :) Naj
Not very long ago, I got introduced to Dream Theater through a guitarist friend. At first, I was a little bit skeptical, but after reading the lyrics and listening a bit more to their stuff, I was convinced that these guys were the best band I've ever heard. Philisophical lyrics (pure poetry, by the way), amazing riffs, rythem and style changes right within the songs... I ended up buying one of their albums a few days after I first heard them, and since then, I've been hooked. I've been inspired.
John Petrucci is the best incredible guitarist and composer.
All right! We know that Dream Theater is the best rock/metal progressive around the world. And that the band members are very amazing when are playing their instruments. I'm one of the thousands of fans of Dream Theater. And is an amazing band. The number one YEAH!
Every new musician I run into, I ask them if they've heard of DT?...I feel compelled to share what I know of this great band with those who are unfamiliar with their music. I can never be disappointed in their approach to a new album, their intensity in the live shows, or their relentless pursuit of bringing the best of themselves to their fans. For that, I congratulate them on being a musician's musician...for understanding that it's all about the music. I hope they continue great success in spite of the lack of support that is common in commercial radio( who needs them anyway!!) Much love and respect to you guys!...can't wait till the next album..
Really informative, good stuff!
Crunchy boogie guitars! Super powerful drumkit! demolisher bass riffs,, What else you can ask for?? Please guys, come more times to Spain!!!
Dream theater. Like a dream comes true.
Dream Theater is a very talented group of guys. Congratulations on your 20th anniversary ! Wishing you many more to come !
Been a fan for many years... They are truly the most talented musicans I have had the pleasure to see and listen too. I have always loved progressive rock like the greats "Yes, ELP, Pink Floyd", if you listen to DT closely enough, you will here the influences. But theres nobody as tasteful in their arena as the masters, Dream Theater. I hope they will continue to bless our existence with their talent.
They need to come to Australia! We're dying for some decent talent down here!
im 53yrs old and i enjoy seeing you guys every year for the past 14 yrs thank you for all that practicing and we need more liquid tention!

Very nice interview. I would like to thanks all DT guys for make our lives special with your music and lyrics. Here in Mexico you have a lot of fans. DT music will remain in us forever.
its unrealalistic about how good dream theater is...the musicians are just fucking awsome!!
Mexico loves you Dream Theater !!!!!! you are the greatest musicians in the World
I believe that Dream Theater is the best band of the world by their innovative style and the level of all the musicians is indisputable, I am one of the admirers but large that dream theater has in latinoamerica. You have many fan's in Peru!! M.A.S.O.
probably one of the most underrated bands in history. they are very complex musicians who understand the theory of music and know how to implement it into their music. the more i hear 'em the more im jealous though, because i can only play a few songs, but some of their music is too damn difficult, even for a julliard university of music student (myself). but their hardest song to play - for me at least - is this dying soul....the solo and unison parts and the end are impossible
This interview show us how's the serious way to make music. Colombia loves you, Guys. Dream Theater rules!
My Favorite Group of ALL TIME! Exellent interview, these guy's Do Not compromise their writing of music or put their finger in the wind to see which way the trend is going. I like that.
i love dream theater and iron mike portnoy
I think that you guys are amazing. I really enjoy your music and I like what you guys do. You know you'll never really know just how much you guys really change people and help people cope with the things they're facing in life. I hope that sometime you guys could make a stop in Houston sometime. Well thats about all I gotta say. Oh and don't forget about Houston, TX.
Peace!!!!!!!!!

I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of thier latest disc. As a relatively new DT fan, and I must say over the past year not much other than DT has been played on my CD, MP3, boom box and truck Stereo, I have been on the website waiting for the word that I can add another piece of Prg Rock history to my collection. Guys, this is a plee.... Calgary needs to hear DT live.... A plane ticket to Toronto is expensive you know! But what needs to be done will be done. Rock on DT you are truely The Best!
